Orange gerbera daisies on an ankle

Botanical · Ankle · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows three orange gerbera daisies with green centres, layered with green leaves and thin curling vine tendrils. Dark outlines define the petals and leaves, with soft shading that gives the flowers some depth. The four photographs show the same ankle and foot from different angles against a black background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You are forty miles past the last petrol station when the orange starts, a smear of it along the verge where the rain came through in March and nobody expected anything to survive. Gerberas, your mother called them, the flowers that look painted on. You stop the van because they are wrong out here, three heads turned to the same weak sun, their green middles bright as cut glass.

Old Ibrahim at the depot used to say the desert keeps a ledger of who has been generous. He meant the drivers who left water at the cattle grid, not flowers. You kneel by the cracked edge of the tarmac and find the stems have pushed up through a gap no wider than your palm, their leaves folded like hands. Thin vine tendrils curl off toward nothing, reaching for a fence post that washed away years ago.

You think about the phone call you didn't return, the flat in Leeds with the radiator that knocked all winter, the way you told everyone you were only passing through. The petals are fierce orange, the kind of colour nobody would pick for a funeral and everybody wears anyway.

You pick one, not all three. You drive on with it on the passenger seat, its stem standing in an empty coffee cup, and by the next town the petals have opened wider than they were, as if the road had only been waiting for someone to notice.
