Orange flower tattoo on the knee

Botanical · Other · Colour · Photo

A large orange flower with layered, pointed petals and a grey centre ringed by pale dots is tattooed on the outer side of a knee. The petals are shaded with darker orange and red tones and outlined in solid black, giving a bold, illustrative look. The flower sits centrally on the knee against a brick wall, with a second bare knee on the left of the frame for comparison.

The sunflowers of Carrowmere were never cut before the first frost, because the old queen had decreed that a flower which turns to the sun should be allowed to finish its turning. So when the tinker's boy came down the eastern pass in the dry month, boots tied on with rope and nothing in his pack but a whetstone, he found the fields standing tall and orange along the road, every head bent towards the lane as though it were waiting for someone.

Nobody in the village would tell him why. The miller said it was only custom. The baker's wife said the flowers had been watching that road since the young prince rode off to the border wars, and that he had promised to come home the same way he left. The boy said nothing. He walked to the largest field, knelt among the stalks, and cut the seed-head from the tallest flower, a grey disc ringed with pale dots like a clock with no hands.

He carried it to the well in the square and rinsed it, and the water ran dark over a small gold ring pressed into its centre. The baker's wife dropped her basket. The miller came running with flour still on his sleeves. By dusk the whole of Carrowmere stood in the square, and not one of them looked at the boy's face, only at the disc in his palm.

Then the queen's bell began to ring, though no one had pulled the rope, and out in the fields every head turned at once to face the square.
