The kitten came ashore in a fish crate on the Tuesday after the big gale, wedged between two lobster pots at the foot of the rock steps. It was no bigger than my hand then. It sat with its tail wrapped round its feet like a scarf someone had forgotten on a chair, and it glared at me with the particular disapproval of a creature that had been wronged by the water and did not intend to forgive it. I named it Marmalade. Mam said that was a name for a bread bin. We argued about it for a week, and by then the cat answered to both.

Winter on the point is long. The lamp has to be wound every night and the glass polished every morning, and Mam climbed the hundred and twelve steps twice a day with a tin of paraffin and a flask of tea, her knees complaining the whole way. The kitten rode on my shoulder up the tower and sat on the gallery rail in the wind as if it had built the place itself.

In March the fog came in thick and stayed nine days. On the last night a ship's horn sounded out past the Carrick reef, and Mam would not let me climb with her. She came down at dawn, grey and soaked to the skin, and found the kitten already at the foot of the stairs, tail curled tight around its body, waiting. Mam knelt on the wet stone and held out her hand, and for once Marmalade did not glare at anyone.
