Two sitting cats outline on the neck
Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows two cats seen from behind, sitting close together with their heads turned slightly and tails curled into a loop at the base. It is drawn as a single black outline with no shading or fill, and the line weight is even throughout. The design is centred on the back of the neck against plain, pale skin, with the top of the head and hair cropped at the top of the frame.

The shutter on Mill Lane came down at ten past nine every night, and at ten past nine the two cats were already waiting on the bakery step, sitting shoulder to shoulder as if they had been asked to pose for a portrait and had decided to be difficult about it.

Frank Doyle had baked in that cellar kitchen for thirty-one years. He never named the cats. He saved the ends of the bloomers in a tin by the back door and told them, 'I'm not feeding anybody's cats,' while the grey one blinked at him and the black one lashed its tail twice, which Frank took for agreement. The tails were what he noticed most. Even when the pair stood to stretch, they drifted back together and knotted at the base, so they always seemed to be sitting on one long rope of fur.
In March the landlord sold the building to a man who wanted a vape shop. Frank cleared the cellar on a Friday, wrapped the last loaf in paper, and sat on the step with the cats. Nobody asked where they would go. The grey one leaned her head against his knee, and the black one turned toward her, just a fraction, the way it always did.
The next morning the hoarding was up and the step was gone under plywood. Frank walked past on his way to the bus stop and heard, from somewhere behind the boards, a soft double purr that followed him down the street until the lights of the main road swallowed it. He didn't look back. He knew they would still be sitting there, close, tails knotted, waiting for someone to leave the crusts out.
