Orange poppies and slender stems on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows three open orange poppies and two smaller buds on long, thin, dark stems that rise and cross up the arm. The petals are filled with orange ink and softly shaded, while the stems are drawn in fine, dark lines. The design sits on a pale forearm against a dark blue background, with the flowers grouped toward the upper half.

Her brother Len had ploughed the top field under in March and sworn he would not sow the bottom one again. He said the soil had gone thin. He said a lot of things that spring, most of them to the tractor. Marion had kept the tin of seed on the windowsill above the sink, the one with the faded Dutch windmill on the lid, and every evening she had looked at it the way you look at a clock you have been told is broken.

The petals had already begun to crumple at the edges, orange as a struck match. She set the jar on the table, and Len came in from the yard, saw them, and sat down heavily without taking his cap off.
"Where'd those come from?" he said.
"Same place as always," she said, and went to find a second jar, because there were more buds than he would admit, closed tight as fists and holding on to the rain.
