Ornamental fern tattoo behind the ear
Blackwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A stylised fern or feather design is tattooed on the skin behind the ear, with its curved stem running down towards the neck. The leaflets are filled with solid black ink and fine linework, and the spiral curls along the stem add ornamental detail. The image is in black ink only, with the ear and hair framing the tattoo in a close side view.

The wind off Ruapehu has already found the gap in your jacket when the ute slows at the top of the Desert Road, and the driver leans across to shove the passenger door open. "Pass shuts by dark," he says, nodding at a sky gone the colour of wet slate. You climb in beside a walking stick carved from manuka, its handle curled over like a fern uncoiling, and he tells you not to touch it, because it belonged to his nan and she never let anyone else hold it either.

Tussock blurs past in long brown combs. The radio crackles with a warning about ice on the bridges at Rangipo, and he hums along to a song you almost know. Every few miles he taps the dashboard, where a sticker of a silver fern is peeling at one corner. "Nan reckoned a fern takes a hundred years to make its first proper curl," he says. "Took me till thirty to believe her."
Snow starts, big and slow, settling on the windscreen faster than the wipers can clear it. You watch the spirals of the carved handle sway between your knees and count them the way she must have counted years, one curl for each winter she got through on this road. By the time the lights of the lodge come up through the flakes, the sky has closed like a fist.
He sets your pack on the step and presses the stick into your hands. "Bring it back in spring," he says. "Nan's rule. Anything that gets you over the pass owes the road a return." Then the taillights shrink into white, and you stand there holding a fern that has learned to hold on.
