Ornate key with bow and castle on a foot

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

A colour tattoo of an ornate key runs across the top of a foot, with a red and white polka dot bow forming the bow of the key and a small castle with a Mickey-shaped silhouette at the tip. The design uses bold dark outlines with flat, solid fills in red, gold, blue and white. The photo is taken from above against a dark, glossy surface, with the key sitting centrally and the toes visible on the right.

The Chamberlain of Vellmoor sent for you before the bells, which is how you knew the trouble was real. Pellmere Gate had lost its key in the night, and the gatekeeper swore it had hung on its nail at dusk, the nail still warm from someone's grip. You pulled on your leather apron and walked up the hill with the frost cracking under your boots.

Pellmere castle has a hundred towers and not one of them plain. Its gate opens only to the key that knows its name, and that key is the one you forged eleven winters ago, gold as a wheat field, its head bound in a red silk bow stitched with white spots like pearls spilled on a cloth. The Queen had asked for something that looked like a sweet and could open a kingdom. You had laughed and said yes. Now the wards lay silent and the chamberlain's men were turning out the kitchens.

You found the thief the way smiths find everything, by listening. Under the stair of the old armoury a small voice was humming a tune the castle bells used to play. A girl of nine sat there with the key in her lap, polishing its bow with her sleeve. She had wanted, she said, to see the castle from inside before the king's men pulled it down for the new road. She had only ever seen it through the bars.

You did not take the key from her. You sat down on the cold stone beside her, the way your own father once sat beside you, and told her the castle would still be standing in the morning, because keys are only ever lent. Then you turned it in the lock together, the gate swung open on a courtyard full of bells, and you tied a fresh ribbon on the bow so that anyone who came after would know whose it was.
