Ornate scallop shell design

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A drawn tattoo design of a scallop shell with radiating ribs, each filled with fine stippled dots. A raised oval gemstone with a dotted border sits at the centre of the shell, and smaller ridged sections fan out below it. The work uses black linework and dotted shading on a pale pink background, with no colour ink.

The abbot wanted the shell finished before the Lenten fair, so I sat at the north window with my quill and a pot of iron-gall ink, pricking the ribs one dot at a time. Brother Matthew, who had quicker hands, laughed at me for it. Eleven dots to a rib, fourteen ribs, and the dots at the edges had to shrink as the ribs fanned out, or the whole thing looked like a dropped fan rather than a shell. I told him God does not hurry the sea either.

The stone was the difficulty. Father Cuthbert had sent to the fishing hamlet at Saltmere for a black bead the tide had rolled up from the rocks, worn smooth by no hand we could name. He set it in the centre and said it was a pearl that had gone wrong, and that wrong things were often the Lord's favourites. I did not argue. I drew its dotted border twice, because the first ring looked like a row of teeth and the second looked like a rosary, which the abbot said was better for a shrine.

On the last night I ran out of patience and left the lowest rib bare, a single clean strip of vellum the colour of skimmed milk. Matthew found it at Prime and asked why. I said a shell with no empty place would never hold anything. He thought me mad, and perhaps I was, but when the pewter badges came back from the founder the bare rib showed as a bright silver line, and the pilgrims rubbed it with their thumbs on the road south the way they touch the bones of the saints.

Last week a carter bought one for his daughter. She turned it over in her small palm and found the black eye at the centre, looking up at her from the wrong side of the sea, and she laughed as if she had been told a secret.
