Ornate scrollwork monogram drawing

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a detailed pencil drawing of ornate, interlocking acanthus-style scrolls and leaf forms that together suggest a large decorative letter. The linework is fine and controlled, with shaded areas giving the scrolls depth and a slightly engraved appearance. The drawing sits on a grey, brushed metal surface with soft highlights, and the design fills most of the frame.

The letter had to be drawn before it could be cut, and Ada Pryce had spent three evenings on the capital alone, working the acanthus leaves until the pencil lines went soft with handling. Her father wanted the monogram for a watch case bound for a shipping agent in Liverpool, a man who would never see the back of it except when he flipped the lid to check the time.

On the fourth morning the scrolls still refused her. The left-hand curl kept sprouting one leaf too many, and the tail of the letter wandered off the page like a dog that had smelt something better. Ada put down her pencil and went to the window, where the Warstone Lane gasworks painted the sky the colour of tin. She counted the leaves on the lamp bracket outside, then on the railings, then on a cabbage stalk someone had dropped in the gutter.

Her father came in with his coat still wet and found her laughing at the cabbage. He looked over the drawing, tapped the loop where the stem doubled back on itself, and said the trick was to let one leaf go. A scroll wants to breathe, he said, and a letter is only the place where the breathing stops for a moment.

She cut the case that week with the fine graver, the one with the bone handle worn to the shape of her grip. The scrolls came up silver under the bench lamp, shaded where she had shaded them, and when the agent in Liverpool opened the lid he would find an A that seemed to be unwinding itself, one leaf free, the way she had left it.
