Outline crown on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small crown outline in black ink, with three points and a flat base, sits on the forearm. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the tattoo is the only colour in the image. The grey knit sleeve at the upper left frames the design against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dessie never lifted his pen. At twenty to four the lamps over Hartley Street market still hummed orange, and he'd sit on an upturned crate with a biro and draw the same thing on the cardboard lid of whatever he'd just unloaded: a crown, three points, flat along the bottom, one line that started and ended in the same place. He said it was the wages of the early shift, and that nobody on the lorries ever argued with a crown.

I was nineteen and carrying cauliflowers for four quid an hour when he first let me hold the pen. My line wobbled at the left point. He took the lid, looked at it the way the wholesalers looked at tomatoes, and said the wobble was honest, which was more than most of the men in the cab office could say.

He retired the spring the market moved to the new units out past the ring road. On his last morning he pressed a folded lid into my hands, a crown drawn in one unbroken stroke, and told me the trick was to decide where the line ended before starting it. Then he walked off towards the bus stop with his flask under his arm, and I never saw him again.

Now I'm the one on the crate at twenty to four. Lorries reverse in the dark, and I draw my crown on every box that comes off them, the same stroke, the same wobble on the left point. Last week a driver from Leicester asked what it meant, and I told him it was the only thing on the yard that didn't need signing for.
