Pell the glazier's girl was sent up to Harrowgate Keep in the last week of frost, because the old lord wanted his window mended before the spring court came. Nobody had climbed the north tower in forty years. The stairs had lost their treads, and the wind came through the arrow slits like a dog looking for scraps.

The window was a single triangle of glass set point-down in the wall, its lead gone soft and black. Pell knelt on the cold flags and lifted the first shard. Under it the glass was not clear. It was dark, dark as a well, and when she tilted her lamp there were specks in it that moved, pink and green and a blue like cold milk, turning slowly like sparks in a fire that had gone out.

She worked three days. Each evening the cold came up through her knees, and she set the last piece in place and went down to sleep by the kitchen hearth. On the fourth morning the steward climbed up to check her work and found the triangle full of stars, all of them wheeling. He went white and said it was no window at all but a door, and that the old lord's grandfather had bricked it shut for a reason nobody would name.

Pell took her wages and walked home by the river. She never told anyone what she had seen. But every night after, she held a cup of water up to the lamp and watched the little lights swim, and she left one corner of her own cottage wall unplastered so that something could still get through.
