Outlined daisy tattoo in black ink

Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a daisy-like flower tattoo with eight elongated petals, each outlined in heavy black ink, around a solid black centre. The petals are left unshaded, so the skin shows through as light grey, and the image is framed tightly on the design. The lighting is uneven, with a bright highlight across the upper left of the skin.

Mr Pryce says they are weeds and should be sprayed, but I have been counting them instead, the way you used to count the petals off the Michaelmas ones in Gran's garden. Eight to a flower, always eight, though nobody has ever told me why.

On Tuesday a man came to the window asking after a parcel he had left on the 6.40 in March. It was not in the lost property cupboard. What was there, wrapped in a yellowed handkerchief with a daisy stitched in one corner, was a tin of boiled sweets and a card with no name on it, only the words "Eight petals, one for each year you were gone." I did not know what it meant. I still don't. I put the tin back and told him to come on Thursday.

Thursday came and I went out early, before the porters, and knelt on the wet concrete at the edge of the platform. The largest flower there had its outline drawn in frost, every petal sharp, and in its middle a dark seed the wind had not managed to shift. I pressed my thumb over it. Then the whistle went and I stood up, dusting my knees, and when I looked back the flower was bent flat under a trolley wheel, and the man was walking up the platform toward me with his hat in his hand.
