Fox outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small seated fox in a single black outline faces right, with its tail curled around its feet. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the tattoo sits on the side of the ankle. The photograph is black and white, with the foot resting on a wooden floorboard background.

Mrs Pryce kept the bakery on Tanner Lane, and every morning before the milk cart she was up, raking the embers and shaping loaves by feel.

One morning the flour bin was found with a neat paw print in it, small and sharp, and no sign of a wall broken. Mrs Pryce said nothing. She set a tray of crusts by the back door, the way her mother had done for hungry strays, and went back to her kneading.
The fox came the next night, and the night after. It sat on its haunches with its tail wrapped round its feet like a woman keeping her shawl close, and it watched her with eyes that looked more amused than afraid. She talked to it while she worked. She told it about her husband, who had gone to the coast for work and never written, and about the price of yeast. The fox listened and never once looked away.
On the last morning of that winter the back door stood open to the frost, and the tray was empty and clean. In the flour by the bin lay a single print the size of a hand, and beside it, pressed into the dust as if someone had sat there a long while, the mark of a tail curled round two feet.
