Three chevrons on a wrist
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of three solid black chevron arrows stacked one above another on the inner forearm, pointing right. The bold, flat-filled shapes have crisp edges and no visible shading. A gold link watch and a bracelet with an anchor charm sit beside the tattoo on the wrist, against a soft, out-of-focus background.

Mrs Pruett wanted the arrows off the wall at the end of Hollin Lane before the fair came through, because she said they made the place look like a dare. Dad said the arrows had been there since before her husband's time, and he took down his tin of black gloss and the flat brush he kept for nothing else, and climbed the ladder while the lamps were coming on in the cottages.

The fair arrived late that year, the lorries grinding up the lane in the dark with their headlamps swinging over the hedges. The big wheel was still half in its crates when a girl in a green anorak jumped down from the first cab and stood under the wall with her torch. She didn't look at the church or the pub sign. She looked at the three black points, one above the other, all aimed the same way, and she said to nobody in particular that they were pointing at the field, and then she turned the lorry in.
Dad had painted those arrows himself in the autumn of the great flood, and he had never once been told they were any use. When he climbed down that evening there was fresh gloss on the stone already, slightly tacky, a fraction heavier than his own strokes, and the edges were so crisp he could not have bettered them. Nobody in the village admitted to it. He stood in the lane a long while with the brush dripping in his hand, then screwed the lid onto the tin and left it on the wall for whoever came next.
