Owl with patterned wings on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A small owl with spread wings sits on the outer thigh, with grey and brown plumage, striped chest markings and large pale eyes. The wing feathers are shaded in turquoise, orange and brown, and the wing bones carry black and white swirling filigree patterns. A soft orange wash sits behind the bird against the skin, and the photo is cropped to show only the thigh and part of a pair of shorts.

Kallias had been bent over the bench since the lamps were lit, and the owl was still wrong. Its wings lay pinned flat on the wax, the silver wire coiled in tight spirals along each bone, and Eudoxa the goldsmith's widow had said the eyes must look at the living, not the dead. He pressed a fine thread of silver into a swirl and watched it bloom, then cursed when it snapped.

Outside, the harbour bells rang for the grain ships. His master had sold the workshop to a man from Corinth who wanted gilt cups, not birds, and the commission for the temple of Athena had come only because nobody else would take it on a fortnight's notice. Kallias knew the old owl wings were glazed in turquoise and ochre, the feathers carried over from the potters' kilns, because the potter's boy had told him so over a jug of wine.
He worked until his fingers cramped. At dawn he set the piece on the sill to cool, and a real owl landed on the rail above, grey and striped, watching the silver with the same unblinking stare. Kallias held still. The bird turned its head once, looked at the ornament, then at him, and lifted into the pale sky with a sound like cloth tearing softly.
When the priestess came to collect it, she turned the wings to the light and frowned. "Too still," she said. Kallias did not argue. He took the pliers, bent one wing a finger's width higher, and let the feathers catch the morning as if they meant to leave.
