Palm trees and hibiscus flash design

Botanical · Mixed · Flash

The design shows two solid black silhouetted palm trees arching across the upper and left sides, with a large red hibiscus flower, buds and green leaves in the lower right. Two small outlined butterflies sit in the open space, and a thin black swirling line curls along the bottom edge. The palm trees are filled in solid black with fine serrated fronds, while the flower and leaves use flat red and green colour on a plain beige background.

Nobody at Penhallow Halt expected the cutting to take, least of all me. It arrived in February in a biscuit tin, wrapped in a wet sock, carried off the Falmouth boat by a deckhand called Moss, who said his granny had grown them in Barbados and would I mind it on the platform bench until the next up train. I said I would mind it. I had a ticket window, a bell that didn't work and a timetable that ran to four trains a day. A plant seemed like a fair thing to add.

By May it had put out a red flower the size of a saucer, and the signalman's boy began bringing the milk churn water down to it before the 9.14 came through. The two palms I'd planted in old oil drums along the fence had begun to lean over the cinder path, which the platform inspector said was a hazard, and then, after standing under them for a minute with his cap off, said was not. Butterflies came in from the marsh and settled on the bud as if someone had ordered them.

In September the inspector came with a letter from head office. The line was closing for resignalling, the halt would be shut, and the drums would go to a scrapyard in Bodmin. I told him the hibiscus was going home with me. He looked at the tin, then at the sea beyond the fence, and said the last train was Friday and he would let me have the bench.

On Friday I took the last up train with the tin on my knees and one bud still shut tight. Somewhere past Bodmin Road it opened all at once, the colour of a struck match. I didn't get off.
