Watercolour daisy on upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A daisy with yellow centre and multicoloured petals in pink, orange, green and blue sits on the arm. Soft colour washes, splatters and running drips surround the flower, giving a painted, loose look. The tattoo is shown in close framing against a plain pale background, with a plaid shirt sleeve at the top of the frame.

You take the last ride of the season because the lights are already going out along the field, and the man on the generator says it's the only one he'll run after dark. The waltzer creaks under you. Somebody's paint tin has split on the hay bales, and the colours have run down the wooden horses in long wet tongues, pink into orange, orange into a green that won't dry. Your sister is waving a coconut at you from the rail. She has been waving it for ten minutes.

Behind the candyfloss stall there is a caravan with its door propped open, and a woman inside painting daisies onto the lids of tin cups. She does not look up when you come in. She says the daisies are for people who are leaving, because a daisy is the only flower that tells you yes or no in one pull of its petals, and nobody on a fairground ever wants a no. You ask her what the yellow middles are for. She says those are for the ones who stayed.
You leave with a cup in your hand and a drip of blue running down its side. Your sister calls your name across the car park, and when you turn round the lights are off, the field is grey, and the colour has already started to slide off the cup and onto your fingers, the way it does when you hold something too long in the rain.
