Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black paw print with one large pad and four toe pads sits on the side of the torso, under the raised arm. The shapes are filled with bold black ink, with some softer texture and grain inside the pads. The photograph is black and white, with a light grey chevron-patterned wall behind the figure and a hand gripping a loose grey top.

The grey dog came down the slipway at low tide with one pad split and left a line of black prints across the wet stones, each one the size of a palm. Mags Tulloch saw them first from the nets. Her husband's boat was still out past the Skerry, and the northerly had been blowing for three nights.

Nobody in Port Ardle knew whose dog it was. It belonged to no house on the quay. At dusk it walked the harbour wall and stopped at every mooring, and the prints it left in the salt dried dark on the stone and stayed there when the tide came in and went out again.

Old Donal said the prints marked the way home, that the dog was walking the channel between the rocks so the boats could find it in the dark. Mags did not believe him, but she took the lantern and followed the trail to the end of the mole, where the marks ran out at the edge of the water.

The dog was sitting there with its tail curled round its feet. Far out, a single lamp swung twice and then steadied. Mags held her light up and the dog stood, shook itself, and waited. On the next flood the boats came in one after another, keeping to the black marks the sea had not yet rinsed from the stone. When the last hull was tied up, the dog trotted off up the quay, and on the chandlery step it left one more print, pressed deep and clean.
