Mickey Mouse silhouette behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a small Mickey Mouse head silhouette tattooed behind the left ear, at the edge of the hairline. The solid black shape has a grainy, speckled grey finish that gives it a shimmering look. The composition is tight on the ear, a silver stud earring and the soft skin of the neck, with the tattoo placed centrally in the frame.

Her father had set traps for thirty years and never caught the thing. He called it a clever one, a mouse with manners, because it never touched the bread already on the racks, only the sugar bin and the bag of caster she kept behind the mixer. Win had stopped swearing at it around the time she started leaving a heel of yesterday's cob on the windowsill by the proving cabinet.

Two small round prints, and a bigger round one between them, the way a child draws a mouse. She crouched there longer than she meant to, the oven ticking as it warmed, and thought of her father laughing into his tea.
She didn't set the trap. Instead she rolled a scrap of dough into three small circles, pressed them together on a tray and baked them alongside the morning batch. When the light came up grey over the bins, she left them cooling on the sill with the window ajar. By seven they were gone, along with a teaspoon she had not missed, and the prints led straight to the drain.
