Small daisy tattoo on a toe
Botanical · Other · Mixed · Photo
A small daisy sits on the middle phalanx of the second toe, with a bold black outline around white petals and an orange centre. The linework is clean and the fills are flat, with no shading. The toe is photographed close up against a light, textured fabric, and the red nail polish with a small floral pattern on the big toe is not part of the tattoo.

She knelt on the wet stone and counted the petals aloud, the way her mother had taught her to count passing ships. Twelve white ones, bold as lace, edged in black ink that the weather had never managed to rub away. The middle was a small orange sun. "You are a stubborn thing," she told it. The daisy did not argue, which Maud took as agreement.
That night the storm came in sideways and the lamp failed at the top of the tower. Her father climbed with the oil can and did not come down until dawn. Maud went out at first light and saw that the sea had stripped everything from the rock except that one flower, lying flat against the stone and shining like a coin someone had dropped and forgotten.
She did not pick it. Some things on that coast were meant to be found by people who came back for them, so she sat down beside it with the tin of biscuits and the flask, and began to count the petals again, slowly, in case they had changed while she slept.
