The hire car's air conditioning gave up somewhere past the last petrol station, so Marguerite drove with the windows down and her bare feet up on the dashboard, toes lacquered the colour of a traffic cone. Her brother Tomasz kept saying the paint would crack on the baking vinyl. She told him that was the point of paint.

They were heading for Coldharbour Flats, a mining town with one bakery and a motel whose sign had lost the letter that spelled its name. Their grandmother had once run a laundry there. She had left instructions in a shoebox: a key, a photograph of a blue door, and a note saying the moths would come out at dusk and nobody should swat them. Tomasz thought it was a riddle. Marguerite thought it was a dare.

At the blue door a woman in a wide straw hat was sweeping sand off the step. She looked at the orange toes, then at the faded photograph, then laughed so hard she had to sit down on the step. The laundry had been theirs, she said. Their grandmother had paid her in butterfly stickers for years, and she had never once thrown them away.

That evening the moths came out over the dry lake, pale and slow, and Marguerite sat on the bonnet with her feet bare to the cooling metal. Tomasz finally stopped complaining about the nail polish. He just watched the small dark wings lift and settle, and said nothing at all.
