Paw print with heart in dotwork

Dotwork · Black and grey · Photo

A paw print is rendered in black stippled dots, with the four toe pads and a larger main pad forming the design. One toe pad is left as clear skin in the shape of a heart, and the dotted edges fade into lighter, scattered specks around the centre. The image is in black ink only, and the close-up framing shows the texture of the dots clearly.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mags Tennant had not slept since the boat went out, and by the third morning the dog had worn a path from the harbour wall to the back step of the Gull and Anchor. He came up the cobbles at first light, wet to the shoulder, and sat where the gulls could see him. Nobody on Skerra had the heart to shoo him off.

The old men said the sea took what it wanted and gave back what it could spare. They said it over the top of their pints, without looking at the widow. Mags set a bowl of fish heads in front of the dog and told him to go home. He did not go home.

On the fourth morning the frost came down hard and the whole yard lay silver. Mags went out with the kettle and stopped. Across the flagstones ran a line of prints, big and round, the toe pads pressed deep as thumbs in dough. At the front, one pad had gone down clean to the stone and left a pale hollow in the shape of a heart, as though the frost had been asked to keep something safe.

She followed the prints down to the slip. They walked into the shingle, out over the wet sand, and stopped at the edge of the tide. Beyond them the sand was smooth and grey, with nothing on it but the cold. She stood there until her feet ached. Then she went back up the cobbles, and the dog walked beside her all the way to the harbour wall and sat down on it until dark.
