Paw print inside a purple heart outline

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo shows a solid black paw print with four toe pads and a main pad, placed inside an open purple outline of a heart. The heart is drawn in a single thin purple line, while the paw is filled with dense black ink that has a slightly textured look. The tattoo sits centred in the frame against plain skin, with the heart's lower point angled towards the bottom right.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear whoever finds this hatch, the dust in the seed vault has gone the colour of weak tea, and yesterday I found the prints. Four toes and a main pad, pressed clean as postage stamps, running from the airlock to the far rack where the rye is kept. Nobody on Halvard Station has kept a dog for eleven years. Tomas swears the last one went out with the second thaw, but Tomas also swears the moon is a hatch.

The prints have a shape I can't leave alone. Whoever made them stepped in the same place twice, and the second set sits inside the first like a sum being checked. I traced one onto the maintenance slate with a stylus, then drew a heart around it, wobbly by hand and open at the top so the paw could sit inside without touching the edge. Mira says that's sentimental nonsense. She is probably right. I still keep the slate in my breast pocket.

Last night I took a torch and a bag of dried liver pellets to the rack, pellets I had been saving for nothing in particular. Nothing came to meet me. But the rye stalks had been bent flat in a line, the way grass bends when something lies down to wait, and on the frost of the wall above the tray someone had scratched the same heart, one unbroken line, lit purple by the grow-lamps.

I have left the pellets in the tray. If you are reading this and you have four toes, come and eat. We will count the prints together in the morning, and whatever is in the rye will be counted too.
