Paw print with heart pad tattoo
Other · Colour · Photo
A paw print tattoo with four oval toe pads filled in dark blue and a larger heart-shaped main pad. The heart has a bold dark outline with soft grey shading inside, while the toe pads are solid blue. The photo is a close, slightly angled shot against warm, uneven background lighting.

The rain came early that autumn, so we were stacking the day's tiles in the drying shed while they were still soft enough to take a mark. Brisa had followed us in as she always did, a grey bitch the carters had left behind at the wharf, and she walked the wet clay rows with her nose down, pleased with herself. Master Verus shouted at her from the door. I shouted too, mostly to make the other boys laugh.

By dusk there were forty tiles printed with four round toes and one broad heart of a pad, pressed deep where she had lingered to chase a beetle. Verus wanted them broken and reworked, because a tile with a dog's foot on it was bad for trade and worse for the good opinion of the gods. I said nothing. I took the one she had marked most clearly, the heart pressed so hard its edges had gone sharp, and I hid it under my tunic.
The kiln fired that night and the other tiles came out hard and red. Mine I set in the mud behind the shed, face up, where nobody would tread, and each morning I checked the rain had not washed the heart away. It never did. Brisa lay beside it through the winter, and when the frost came she pressed her warm belly against the cold stone as if she were keeping it company.
Years later the works were taken over by the army and the shed fell in, but the tile is still there under the turf, the dog's heart pointing towards the river. I know because I put it there myself, and I have never once been sorry.
