Infinity heart and paw print on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single infinity loop is drawn in thin black linework, with the left loop shaped into a heart and a solid paw print sitting in the right loop. The lines vary slightly in weight and the paw is filled in solid black. The ink is shown against warm, dim lighting on a pale forearm, with the design centred in the frame.

Sit down there, and don't touch the radiator, it'll take the skin off you. Right. You want the one about the lurcher on the nineteenth floor, the one your mam won't tell because she cries at the end. Fine. I'm not getting any younger and neither is that lift.

Biscuit belonged to Mr Okonkwo in flat 19B, a grey lurcher with one ear that stood up and one that couldn't be bothered. Every morning at seven the dog walked him down all nineteen floors, and every evening he came back up alone, claws ticking on the lino as if he'd been counting the steps. Then Mr Okonkwo went into the Royal one February and didn't come home. Nobody had the heart to tell the dog. So he kept going down at seven and coming back up at six, round and round the stairwell, landing to landing, like water going round a plughole that never quite gets to the drain.
The caretaker wanted the prints mopped off the landings. My Ray wouldn't let him. Rain came in through the vents and the paw marks set hard in the damp, one loop on every floor, starting at 19B and never once finishing anywhere. Then Tanya from 20A, a girl with a nose ring and no patience for anybody's nonsense, started walking him. She took him down at seven and brought him up again, and she never once tried to stop him going round.
When they came to knock the block down, the men with clipboards said the prints on the nineteenth floor were the only clean ones left in the building. And you know what? Biscuit was still sitting on that landing when they found him, waiting for the lift that doesn't come. So when you see a loop like that, don't go asking where it starts. Just keep walking it with somebody.
