Heart with dog outline and blue paw print

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A thin black outline of a heart contains two dog head shapes facing each other, with a solid blue paw print in the lower part of the heart. The linework is fine and even, and the blue fill is the only colour or shading. The tattoo sits on the upper back, shown against plain skin and a dark, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pask wanted her ticket stamped before the last waltz, and I had blue ink up to my wrists from the pad, which is why I didn't notice the dogs at first. Two of them sat on the side steps of the Starlight Rooms in the rain, a black collie called Tosh and a sandy mongrel named Pip, both belonging to Walter Givens, who taught the Saturday foxtrot and never once came inside without them.

Walter danced like a man reading a letter he did not want to finish. Every Saturday the dogs watched him through the glass of the side door, heads tipped the same way, as if waiting for the news. One night, while the band was on its break, Tosh pressed a damp paw onto my blue pad and then onto my wrist, and Pip did the same. I laughed and scrubbed at them with my handkerchief, but the ink wouldn't come away. It stayed in the creases of my knuckles for a week.

The following Saturday Walter didn't come. The band played on, the floor filled and emptied, and at half eleven the dogs were still on the steps, sitting so close their heads almost touched. When I went out with a torch, Tosh lifted one paw and set it down again on the wet stone, and there was a print there, blue as a bruise under the lamp, though I had nothing on my hands by then.

I took them home that night because there was nowhere else for them to go. Walter's sister rang the hall on Monday to say he had gone to a hospital in Ramsgate and would not be dancing again. The dogs slept on my mat with their noses together, and in the morning the faint blue was still on my knuckles, pressed into the skin like a second set of prints.
