Paw print and infinity script on a lower leg
Lettering · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A large shaded paw print in black and grey sits above an infinity loop with a red heart at its centre and the word Bridgette in black script. The paw pads use soft, smudged shading with some solid black on the toe pads, while the heart and lettering have crisp outlines. The photograph is taken close up against a plain skin background with a neutral wooden floor visible at the bottom.

Every morning at ten to six the collie called Bridgette was waiting at the pit gate, and every morning Ada Clough told her to go home. The dog took no notice. She sat on the cold setts with her ears flat against the wind off the spoil heap, watching the cage rise out of the dark with its lamps swinging like lanterns on a boat.

Tom had worked the coal face at Lowther Drift for nineteen years and had never once come up without the dog's nose pushed into his boots. The February the roof came in, the dog kept coming. The rescue men said it was the bravest thing they'd seen, then said it was pointless, then stopped talking and let her sit where she liked.
Ada never learned to stop waiting herself. She still set two cups on the table and still heard a cage bell in the back of her sleep. Some mornings the collie walked her home the long way, past the chapel wall and the allotments where the frost lay white on the cabbages, and her pads left grey prints on the flagstones with every step.
Those prints dried in the yard and the rain never shifted them. Ada swept the step every Friday but never once swept the marks by the back door, which ran round and round in a figure of eight, back to the start each time, the way the dog had gone on walking long after the pit had closed.
