Paw prints arranged in a heart

Black and grey · Flash

A black silhouette design of many paw prints of varying sizes, arranged to form a large heart shape. The prints are solid fill with no internal linework or shading, and the heart is wider at the top and tapers to a point at the base. Handwritten black lettering reading I love animals sits beneath the heart on a plain white background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frost had kept the allotment path honest for once, so Margaret Dunn could see exactly who had been up before her. Prints the size of a thumbnail ran past the water butt. Bigger ones, rounder, with a neat pad at the heel, went alongside. Then the heart appeared at the gate, fat at the top and drawn down to a point, every toe pressed clean into the white. She stood in her wellingtons with the teapot going cold in her hand and laughed out loud.

Rita from the Women's Institute said it was a fox. Gordon at the pub said badgers, and that they had better manners than people gave them credit for. Margaret knew better, because she had seen the old lurcher at the bottom of Mill Lane, the one with the bent foreleg that everybody fed and nobody owned. He walked the same circuit every morning, stopping at each hedge to see what the hedgehogs had left him, and the rest of the parish's creatures fell in behind him as if he were the postman.

Over the next fortnight the heart came back, once in sleet and once after a hard rain that softened its edges. Each time it was a little larger, its points reaching further toward the compost heap. Margaret stopped sweeping the path. She set a saucer of scraps at the tip of the heart, where the last print always stopped, and in the morning it was licked clean and a single paw print sat beside it, pressed deep, as if someone had signed for the delivery.

She pinned a seed packet to the shed door with I love animals written on the back in marker. She never did decide whether she meant the dog, the foxes, or the whole muddled parish that kept finding its way to her gate.
