Mountain, lake and pines in a diamond on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo shows a peaked mountain with a rising sun and three birds above, framed by tall pine trees and a still lake inside a diamond outline. A rope runs along the bottom point of the diamond. The linework is bold and the shading uses dense black dotting and smooth grey gradients on the mountains, trees and water.

The fog came off Loch Arrin the way it always did in October, low and grey, swallowing the far shore before the kettle had boiled. Morag Dunlop stood at the slipway with a coil of hemp over one shoulder and counted the birds crossing the water. Three, heading east, which meant the wind would hold until dark.

Her father had spun rope for the ferry for forty years, and the first thing he taught her was that a line is only as honest as the thing it points to. Above the loch stood Ben Corrie, with a notch on its shoulder that caught the first sun of the day. When the mist sat thick, he said, you looked for that notch, tied your reckoning to it, and trusted the rope to keep you off the rocks.

Aonghas Reid had gone out on the last crossing before the weather broke, and by mid-morning the ferry bell had not rung on the far side. Morag tied the end of the hemp to the iron ring on the jetty, weighted the other end with a flat stone, and walked it out along the stones until the water took it. She could feel the faint tug of the line answering somewhere under the grey, the way a fish answers a hook.

She pulled steadily, hand over hand, and the rope came tight and humming. Then the sun broke through the notch on Ben Corrie, and the whole loch lit up gold, and there was the ferry, low in the water and rowing slowly towards the pines, with a boy at the oars who had not once looked up from the rope he was following.
