Peace will win and fear will lose on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two arms rest side by side, each carrying a single line of handwritten-style script in black ink. The upper arm reads Peace will win, and the lower arm reads Fear will lose, with the words slanting and varying in height. The ink is dark and even against pale skin, and the lighting is soft on a blue textured background.

Brother Anselm had copied the psalter three times before the abbot asked him for something he could not copy. "Write me two lines," Abbot Oswy said, pushing a sheet across the bench with his thumb. "In your own hand, not the hand of the books. I want the words to lean, the way a man leans when the wind is at him."

Anselm dipped the quill and wrote PEACE WILL WIN along the top, but the ink pooled where he pressed, and the letters came out tall and crooked, like fence posts after a storm. He had never been taught to write his own words. Every line he had put down in forty years belonged to someone who had died before him. He sat looking at the bottom of the sheet for a long while before he wrote FEAR WILL LOSE, smaller, and it sloped the other way, as though it wanted out of the room.
The abbot read it without his spectacles and grunted. "You've made them argue."
"They have always argued," said Anselm. "I only had to hold the pen."
That evening the novices carried the sheet down to the infirmary, where the old cellarer lay with his hands folded on a grey blanket, and they pinned it above the window so the morning would catch it first. In the first light the two lines threw their shadows across the floorboards, one long, one short, and nobody in the room could have said which was which.
