Pigtailed character with bubble gum and bat
Lettering · Mixed · Flash
A stylised drawing of a pigtailed female character blowing a pink bubble and resting a baseball bat on her shoulder, with black and red detailing on her outfit. Bold, hand-lettered phrases in pink, purple and blue wrap around the figure, and the lettering is the most prominent element of the composition. Watercolour-style splashes in pink, purple and teal fill the background, with the figure and text rendered in crisp black outlines.

Mrs Pelham had been sent a letter, and Mr Tebbs from the council had been sent to deliver it, so when Nell Kettering arrived on the green at nine o'clock on the Tuesday with a cricket bat over her shoulder and a tin of pink bubblegum, he was already reading the ruling aloud to the gulls. Nell blew a bubble the size of a pear. It popped on her nose, and she did not wipe it off.

'The fair is not welcome in Thornbury,' Mr Tebbs said, 'and neither are you, young lady.' He had clearly rehearsed it. Nell tapped the sign propped against the candy van, which read A FUN FILLED LOLLIPOP in blue and purple capitals, with the rest of the words hand-lettered in pink underneath. 'Lollipop?' she offered, and held one out. He took it to be polite. By the time he had finished his sentence about sanitary standards, he had licked the whole thing down to the stick and was humming the carousel tune.
That was the trouble with the sugar, everybody in Thornbury agreed later. It got into the council minutes. By Friday Mr Tebbs had signed a permit for three weeks, a pink ribbon in his lapel and a bubble stuck behind one ear, and the mayor's wife was asking Nell for the recipe. Nell only shrugged and leaned the bat against the van. She never did say how she had got him there.
Years on, the children still skipped to her rhyme in the school yard, the one about the lollipop and the bat, though nobody remembered who had written it or what it had been dipped in.
