Lollipop lettering with a bat-wielding woman

Mixed · Flash

A coloured drawing of a cartoon woman with white and blue-tinted hair holds a baseball bat over her shoulder and blows a pink bubblegum bubble. Hand-drawn lettering in blue, purple, pink and red runs around her, with red outlined shapes and dark ink splatters behind her. The painterly background uses loose watercolour washes in pink, purple and teal against a pale background.

Dear Marjorie,

You will not believe what Saturday did to the shop. Mrs Pettifer from the chemist came in at half nine wanting the lollipops she had ordered for the church fête, and I had to tell her the jar had gone missing overnight. The back window was open and the till had been emptied of every coin under a pound. Dad blamed the foxes. A fox does not carry a cricket bat, Marjorie, and I found this one propped against the fridge with a sticky pink smear on the handle.

Fen swore on Nan's life she had been in bed by eleven, but there was a bubblegum wrapper stuck to the sill that still smelled of cherries, and she has never once in her life chewed anything without blowing a bubble the size of a satsuma. I asked her straight out. She just grinned, popped her gum, and said the till was owed a bit of fun.

The money turned up on Sunday morning, every penny of it, tucked inside an empty sweet jar on the counter. Under the lid was a note in scribbled purple and red capitals: SORRY ABOUT THE WINDOW. TRIPLE DIPPED, ON THE HOUSE. Someone had drawn a crooked star beside it and a little bat with a grin.

So I have refilled the jars and bolted the window, and the bat is back in the cupboard under the stairs where it belongs. Come up at Easter and bring your appetite. I have saved you the last green lolly, though Fen says it's hers. Love, Bea.
