Pine tree on inner wrist

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small pine or conifer tree in black ink sits on the inner wrist, with a thin dark trunk and layered, feathery branches. The left photo is a close view of the wrist, and the right shows the same tattoo with the forearm and hand, with a blue sleeve visible. The ink is solid black with broken, brushed edges and no colour, and the image is a side-by-side pair.

Pass me the poker first, the grate's gone grey and I'll not tell this with my feet frozen. There, that's better. Now, the lodgers in the front rooms think the tree in the yard is a holly, and I let them, because Mrs Pennock thinks holly is lucky and she pays on time.

The real one came over from Norway in 1911, wrapped in wet sacking inside a tin trunk belonging to a sailor called Anders Lund, who boarded with us three winters running. He carried that seedling the whole length of the Hull crossing, and when he asked me to keep it in the back yard I said the soil was too salt. He said salt was only a kind of weather, and trees learn weather.

He never came back for it. The Lund boy did, eleven years on, with a cough and a leather case of drawing pens. He sat on that back step and inked the same shape onto his own arm, a straight stem and a feathering crown, one careful stroke at a time, pressing so hard the skin came up in little ridges. I asked him why he'd want a tree that was never ours. He said it was the only thing he'd ever been sure of standing still.

The tree's taller than the chimney now. Last month the wind took the top third clean off and I found it in the gutter, all those layered branches gone black with rain. I kept it, and it's in the tin with the sailor's letters. Mind the step on your way out, by the way. It's worn through in the middle where his boots went.
