Pine trees on the lower leg
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A rear view of two bare legs in black slide sandals, with a tattoo of a cluster of tall, thin pine trees on the back of the right lower leg above the ankle. The trees are drawn in fine black lines and dots, with shading that varies in density to suggest depth and foliage. The ink is black on pale skin, and the plain white wall and grey floor keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tom,

You'll think I've gone soft, but the saplings came up from Kinloch on Tuesday in a van with a bent wing mirror, forty-two of them wrapped in wet hessian, and I spent the afternoon on the slope above Mum's house doing what Dad always said a man should do before he's let near a wedding: dig holes until your hands stop shaking.
The ground was stubborn. Heather roots like wire, and a stone the size of a loaf that I swore at for twenty minutes before Mrs Galbraith from the cottage came up the track with a flask and told me I was doing it wrong. The stone was not going anywhere and neither was I. She was right. I levered it out with the spade handle and she clapped as if it were the Highland Games.
By dusk I had planted nine. Tall, narrow things, the sort that look like they're listening. I've put them in a loose line along the wall, not too close, because Dad used to say pines need room to argue with the wind. Your Fiona rang on Thursday to ask whether they'd be ready by the twelfth. I told her they'd take thirty years to look like anything, and she laughed and said that suited her fine, she wanted something that grew slower than the rest of us.
So come up in June, before the vows. Bring her. I'll show you the row, and you can tell me which one's yours. Love, Callum
