Pinecone tattoo on the inner wrist
Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black pinecone is tattooed on the inner wrist, viewed from the palm side with the fingers curled at the top of the frame. The cone is built from dark shaded scales with pale highlights, and the outline is crisp with some fine interior detail. The tattoo sits centrally on the wrist against plain skin, with a blurred pavement and a striped sleeve in the background.

I have put six of the best in the tin under the stairs for you, the big ones with the open scales, because you always said they looked like something a clockmaker would draw.

I went up to the old fire lookout on Tuesday with the girl from the post office, the one with the bad knee, and we sat on the rail and ate our sandwiches while the wind went through the pines like someone running a comb. She asked me whether it was true that a cone only opens in the heat, and I said I had always believed it was the dry that did it, but that we were both probably wrong, and she laughed so hard she nearly lost her hat over the side.
The school has asked for a nature table for the harvest fair and I have said I will bring the cones, though Mrs Pryce wants them painted gold, which I refuse to do to anything that grew on a hill. Write back soon and tell me whether they let you keep the train timetable in the new station or if they have finally taken it down. I keep thinking of the way you pressed your thumb on the glass and said that the far side of the valley was only a drawing of a place. Your loving sister, Margaret.
