Pink flamingo on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A single pink flamingo stands on one leg, with its neck curved and a yellow and black beak visible. The body is filled with soft pink shading and fine texture, with darker pink outlines defining the legs and neck. The bird is centred on the upper arm against a pale, softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Grandmother Ruth kept the flamingo at the back of the boating lake in Saltcote, though nobody had ever settled whether it belonged to the council or to the lake. It stood on one leg in the shallows every morning, pink as a cut lip, and watched the ice cream queue with the patience of a magistrate. The lifeguard called it Mr Pennant. The children called it nothing at all, because of the beak.

The council sold the boats in June. Ruth wrote three letters and received two replies, both about insurance. So on the last Saturday of August she carried a folding chair down the promenade, sat at the water's edge and tore bread into small pieces, dropping each one a little nearer her feet. The bird considered her for a long time. Then it folded its neck, walked out of the lake with the dignity of a retired colonel, and took the crust from her fingers.

Nobody saw what happened next except a gull and a man selling candyfloss. Mr Pennant strolled up the slipway, crossed the car park, and planted himself on one leg outside the council offices, where the glass doors reflected a pink smear against the grey sky. He stayed there until five o'clock, when a clerk came out to shoo him, and he would not be shooed.

By Monday the phone at the lake office had rung more times than in the whole of July. The boats came back in May. Ruth never said whether she had asked anyone, and Mr Pennant, when the first warm morning came, was already back in the shallows, looking entirely pleased with the arrangement.
