Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The subject is a flamingo standing on one leg, with its neck curved into an S shape. The design is drawn in a single dark outline with no shading or fill, and it sits on a pale forearm. The red and white patterned bedsheet behind the arm is the only other colour in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Marion, the heron in the pond has gone and taken the last of the koi with him, so I've given up on fish and am watching the shallow end instead, where the flamingo from the garden centre is standing on one leg like it has somewhere better to be. Your brother bought it for the lawn in June, thinking it would look smart against the hedge. It looks like a mistake. Nobody in Tewkesbury has ever seen a flamingo in a front garden, and the postman stops every morning to look at it and then looks at me as if I'd put it there on purpose.

I went down to the greenhouse yesterday to find the good secateurs and there was your old sketchbook on the potting bench, the one with the dried clematis pressed in it. Halfway through, there's a flamingo in pencil, neck bent into a long question mark, one foot tucked up under it. I didn't know you'd ever drawn birds. You never told me you could keep a line that steady without lifting the pencil. I sat on the upturned bucket for an hour with it open on my knees.

So I'm sending the sketchbook back with this letter, because I think you meant it for someone who'd look properly. Come in August and bring it with you. We'll stand the plastic bird by the hedge, and I'll show you the one thing I've learned this summer, which is that a bird that stands still long enough gets to be a garden's problem and then, slowly, its pride.

Love, Nan
