Pink infinity ribbon tattoo with the handwritten words love and mom in black script on skin.

Pink infinity ribbon with love and mom script

Lettering · Mixed · Photo

A pink infinity ribbon with soft shading and a darker outline sits across the centre of the frame. Black handwritten script reading love sits above the loop and mom sits to the right, both in clean, thin linework. The pink is softly graded on a pale skin background, and the composition is a close, straight-on view of the design.

Dear Mum,

The hall on Marine Parade has been sold to a man who wants to turn it into flats, so Dad sent me the last tin of chalk from the stage door, the one you always used to mark the floor. I'm writing because I found your card in the lining of my good coat, the one with the steps pencilled on the back: slow, slow, quick quick, slow. You never wrote anything you didn't mean to keep.

Every Thursday you walked the figure of eight across the boards, chin up, never once looking at your feet, and the couples followed the loop you drew without thinking about it. Mr Abbott with his bad hip, the twins from the bakery who argued about who led. You said the eight had no start and no end, only a turn you had to keep coming back to. I thought that was nonsense at twelve. I'm less sure now that I live four hundred miles from that floor.

The last night we ran a dance there, the lights went down and nobody asked for the foxtrot. You just took my hand and started the loop, and I counted under my breath while the room circled behind us. When I reached the bottom of the curve I looked up and you were still smiling at the place where the floor met the wall, as if the next turn was already waiting for us.

I've kept the chalk on my windowsill. I'll send you a photograph of it when the light comes in from the east. Love, and I mean it, always.

Your girl
