Infinity symbol with Survivor script
Lettering · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of an infinity symbol tattoo with the word Survivor written in flowing script across its right loop. The outline and lettering are dark with soft grey shading, and a single red stripe runs along the upper edge of the infinity loop. The image is a close, straight-on crop of the skin, with the design centred and filling most of the frame.

Dear Tom, The gale took the east wall on Tuesday night, and most of the good oak went with it. I went up at first light with a barrow and a lantern I did not need, because the sky had gone the colour of pewter and the sea was flinging shingle over the curtain wall. You will think me soft for writing about a bell rope when half the keep is in the bay, but hear me out.

The rope hung from the chapel gable, and it had hung there so long that nobody called it anything but the rope. Mr Pryce, who kept the place before me, said the red woollen sleeve went on in his grandfather's time so the ringers could find their hands in the dark. The gale tore the iron bell from its frame and it dropped into the nave with a noise I felt in my back teeth. The rope blew loose across the courtyard, and when I picked it up it had knotted itself into a loop with no end to it.
Sixty feet of wet wool, Tom, and not a single fray. Where the red had faded to the colour of rust there was still a thin dark line running along the top, stitched by someone who meant it to last. I sat on a fallen block with the loop across my knees and watched the spray break on the stumps of the wall. The wind had wanted everything this place had and it did not get it all. I have hung the loop on the surviving hook by the door, where it turns a little in the draught.
The bailiff came up at noon with his clipboard and asked for one word for the damage file. I could have given him bell, or wall, or lost. Instead I wrote survivor, which is not the word he wanted but is the true one. Come and visit before the spring tides, love, and I will show you where the stitching runs. Your aunt, Edie.
