Planet row tattoo across the hand
Hand · Mixed · Photo
A hand and wrist are shown with a row of small round planet motifs running diagonally from the wrist towards the fingers. The circles are filled with orange, brown, grey and blue-grey tones, with some shading suggesting surface detail. The plain background is a dark wooden fence and white lace fabric, which keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Sit closer, the fire only warms the one nearest it. You want the road story, the one about the carts. Very well. Out past the salt flats there was a road nobody had paved, only worn into the ground by the wheels of men going to the coast.

Above that road hung the sun's children, a row of them, round and close as beads on a string. The largest glowed the colour of a clay pot just out of the kiln, and it was always first to come down the sky to see who was travelling. Behind it came the brown one, then the grey one, dusty as a camel's back, and last the blue-grey, which had never once been warm.
One night a carter named Hassan Qadri, who owed money in three towns, stopped his cart where the road bent and called up to them. You have watched every journey since the world was young, he said. Tell me which way is safe. The children argued among themselves. The orange one said nothing, only lit the sand so he could see the ruts. The grey one told him the road would take him where he feared to go. He wept, the old women say, but he went on.
Ask the blue-grey why it sits so far back and it will tell you it stayed behind to keep count of the cartwheels, so no traveller goes lost without being named. That is what the stars are for, my little ones, a list of the ones who passed. Now sleep. The fire is going out, and Hassan's cart is still rolling somewhere up there.
