Matching overlapping circle tattoos on two forearms
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two people stand side by side holding hands, and each forearm shows a small tattoo of three overlapping circles in pink, blue and yellow-green. The circles are outlined with fine, clean linework and the overlaps create secondary colours, similar to a colour mixing diagram. The soft outdoor background is out of focus and the couple is cropped below the face, so the tattoos are the clear focus of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Mr Okonedo had taught the apprentices at the print works that you could not trust a colour until you had mixed it yourself, so on the last Friday before the works closed, Ruth stayed late at the light table with three glass jars of ink and a sheet of tracing paper. Magenta first, then cyan, then the yellow that smelled faintly of linseed. She laid the sheet over the lamp and pressed each drop flat with the edge of a palette knife, watching the colours bleed into one another wherever the circles met.

Where the pink crossed the blue it turned to a violet she would never have chosen by herself. Where all three met in the middle the paper went nearly black, and she made herself leave it that way rather than wipe it clean. Mr Okonedo would have called that the honest part. Whatever looks like a mistake at the centre is only the place where everything agrees.
Her brother Tom came in from the loading bay with his cap in his hands and found her still bent over the table. He asked what she was doing, and she told him she was working out which colour he was. He laughed and said he was the grey one, the dull edge of everything, and she pushed the paper across so he could see the green where blue and yellow overlapped, the bright thing that had only ever existed because they stood close.
In the morning the sheet had curled at the corners and the green had soaked so deep into the fibres that no amount of scrubbing would lift it. Ruth pinned it above her bench anyway, and Tom, who had never once asked her to explain anything, stood looking at it for a long time before he went out to the van.
