Plank pose with kitten and rose tattoo

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman holds a high plank on a cork-tiled floor by a sheer curtain while a grey kitten sits on her back. Black and grey rose and leaf tattoos wrap across her side and hip, with soft shading and fine linework. The composition is side-on, with strong window light across the floor and the figure, and her face is out of frame.

It looked, he thought, like a thing that had been told a joke it did not intend to share.

The shop had been Irene's before it was his. She had strung the net curtains across the front window herself, and every spring she had cut the first buds of the Albertine climbing over the back wall and set them in jars along the sill. She had been gone four winters now. Walter had kept the curtains because he could not face taking them down, and he had kept the roses because the cuttings had taken root in the yard without asking his permission.

On the Thursday the kitten leapt onto the sill, then onto the shelf, then onto his shoulder, where it settled as if it had been waiting there all its life. Walter did not shift it. He lifted a single pink bud from the nearest jar, tucked the stem behind the kitten's ear, and found that he was laughing, a sound he had not heard himself make since the funeral.
