The transfer sheets arrived at the Marlow Arms in a brown envelope with no return address, the week after the last of the winter lodgers left. Mrs Pennock said the postman must have mislaid them since Easter. There were six little pictures on the card: a white cat with a blue bow the size of a saucer, a black bunny head with ears like folded oars, a red heart, two ribbon banners, a scatter of blue stars, and a bow with a question mark tucked beside it.

I was seventeen and bored enough to try them all. The bunny went on Ferris's forearm, where he had been bragging about his pier-ticket money, and the cat went on my wrist, just below the bone. You rubbed the backing with a damp flannel and counted to thirty, and then the picture rose through the paper like something surfacing in a rock pool. By August half the boys on the front had a bunny somewhere, and Ferris swore his had gone blue at the ears.
Mine would not come off. Soap did nothing, nor the cold tap, nor the lemon Mrs Pennock threatened me with. On the last evening of the season I walked the length of the pier with the sea going grey under the boards and the lamps coming on one by one, and I held my wrist up against the lighthouse so the bow caught the beam. Ferris was no longer in the ticket booth. Someone had painted over his name.
Mrs Pennock found me at the rail and said nothing about the wrist. She only tucked her shawl round my shoulders and reminded me the room would want turning out by Monday. The heart on the banner had already begun to lift at one corner, red as a fresh cut, and when the tide turned I watched the last of the stars go under.
