Kawaii temporary tattoo sheet with cat and unicorn

Mixed · Flash

A flat sheet of small temporary tattoo designs on a white card, arranged in a grid. The designs include a cat face with a red bow, an origami crane, a crescent moon with sparkles, a shooting star, a unicorn, an orange slice and a gingerbread figure, with the words AWESOME and Orange Squash printed on the sheet. The linework is thin and dark, with soft pastel fills in pink, green and yellow, and the card sits on a plain white background beside two small wooden star clothespins.

Dear Danny,

The galley smells of burnt sugar again because the second cook insists on caramelising everything, so I am writing this at the steel table with a mug of orange squash going warm beside the flour bin. We are four hours out of Aberdeen and the sea has gone as flat as a baking tray, which suits me fine. The crew have finally stopped calling the squash 'that pink stuff' and now ask for it by name.

Your envelope came yesterday in Mrs Abbott's bag, with the sticker sheet inside and a note that said KEEP THESE SAFE, MUM SAYS THEY ARE NOT FOR SCHOOL. I have stuck the cat on the cupboard above the ovens, where she can keep an eye on the gas. The unicorn went on my kettle. The crescent moon is over the bread proving drawer, because I like to think of it watching the dough rise through the night.

The gingerbread man I have kept for myself. Every Sunday I cut them out for the watch on the bridge, and every Sunday one comes back to me with a raisin missing from its face, so I suspect the mate is a thief. I have told him the gingerbread man is a sailor too, having done more crossings than either of us, and he has never once been sick.

Enough of my nonsense. Mind your mother, do your reading, and when you are cross at school look at the paper crane on your wall. Your grandad folded that one on a night ferry in 1978, and it has not sunk yet.

Love, Auntie Ruth
