Her name was Pip Tallow, though nobody on the canal called her anything but the Balloon Woman. She ran the fair barge Marigold with a crate of boiled sweets, a tin whistle and a dog that would not get off the roof. Every August she tied up at Hatherleigh Lock and sold balloons, pink and blue and speckled like sugared eggs, and the children followed her along the towpath as far as the bridge, because a balloon on a string is a promise that it won't be let go.
One year a girl called Nessa came down the path with a yellow bear under her arm and no money in her pocket, so she traded the bear for the smallest bunch. Pip took it and tied the bear to the mast, where it sat watching the water like a man waiting for a train that was never coming. Nobody thought much of it until the wind turned in the night, and the balloons slipped their knots off the stern, every one of them, and went up over the poplars towards the hills.
Pip didn't shout. She climbed onto the roof beside the dog, took a pinch of stars from the tin in her apron, and threw them up into the dark one at a time. Some fell back in the wet grass. The rest stayed where they were.
Morning came grey and ordinary. Nessa found the balloons snagged in the hawthorn at the top of the lock, still tied, and the white cat with the red bow sitting among them, looking as if she had arranged the whole thing herself.
