Four playing card suit tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Four arms meet in the centre of the frame, each wrist showing a small playing card suit: an outlined diamond, a solid black club, a solid black spade and an outlined heart. The outlines are thin and even, while the club and spade are filled in solid black. The image is in black ink only, set against a dark, softly lit background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sunday, and the lorry for the Bramleys is late again, so we have the back step and the pack with the water stain shaped like Jersey. Ada deals with her thumbs the way Nan taught her, and says the diamonds are money, the clubs are whatever we owe Mr Haskins for the ladders, and the spades are for telling lies. Nobody asks which is which. Wasps drone in the windfalls under the Worcester tree, and Dot keeps swatting at them with the lid of the biscuit tin.

We play for the rows. Whoever loses the hand picks the ladder for tomorrow, which is the worst one, the rickety thing with the split rung near the top of the Blenheim trees. Dot lost three in a row and went quiet in the way that means she is counting. She held her cards close to her chest like she was hiding a sparrow.

On the last hand Ada had the king of hearts and the ace of spades, and a face that gave nothing away, but she winked at the orchard instead of at us, and Dot saw her thumb slide under the deck. There was shouting, then the Haskins lorry came up the lane with its horn going, and by the time the crates were loaded nobody remembered the score except Dot. She took the split ladder for the morning without a word and climbed it at dawn to pick the highest fruit, calling down that the best apples always hang where the wasps can't reach.

Ada still deals the pack on Sundays. Nobody has ever asked her to stop, and nobody has ever once let her shuffle.
