Playing card suit wrist tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four pairs of hands and wrists meet at the centre of the frame, each wrist carrying a small playing card suit: an outlined diamond, a solid club, a solid spade and an outlined heart. The linework is clean and simple, with the outlined suits in thin lines and the club and spade in solid black fill. The photograph is black and grey against a dark background, and the tattoos are shown in sharp focus with the arms arranged to form a star shape.

Dear Marjorie,

You will not believe what the Pargeter girls did on Saturday. They came over the back wall at dusk with a pack of cards that had lost its box, and they wanted the table under the apple tree cleared. Nobody argues with Ivy Pargeter when she is holding a deck, so I cleared it.

They dealt patience on the upturned wheelbarrow for an hour, then Ruth stood up and said the game could never be finished unless they all agreed the diamonds were the honest suit. Bea laughed and said diamonds were only glass that had been told to sit still. The argument went round the way Ferris and I used to argue over the runner beans, until Maud laid her hand flat on the table and the other three followed, one on top of the other, fingers splayed like the spokes of a wheel.

Then they turned their wrists up under the lamp to show the marks they had had done in Harrow Street last spring, four small suits inked where the pulse runs, and I swear the moths stopped bothering the bulb to look.

I asked what the bet had been. Ivy said there was none. They had only wanted one thing in their lives that would come up the same way every time they were dealt in. Then she gathered the pack, shuffled it badly, and cut it with a look that said I was not to ask again.

Yours in the rhubarb, Edie
