Four playing card suit tattoos on wrists

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Four arms meet in a circle against a dark background, each wrist showing a small playing card suit: an outlined diamond, a solid club, a solid spade and an outlined heart. The diamond and heart use thin black linework, while the club and spade are filled in solid black. The ink is all black, and the tight arrangement of the four arms gives the photo a clustered composition.

Dear Mags,

The ferry put us ashore at Hollin Quay on the last Tuesday of October, and the rain was already sideways by the time Teddy found the pub with the back room. You'll remember the back room. Four chairs, one bulb, and a deck of cards so greasy it stuck to your thumb. Hal wanted to play for the crossing fare. Nobody wanted to play for the crossing fare, which is how we ended up doing it anyway.

We were four strangers that night. Teddy dealt badly and cheated worse, and Ines counted every card like a bank clerk. Hal kept winning small hands and losing big ones. I kept thinking about the diamond I'd sketched on a napkin at the harbour wall, because my nan always said diamonds meant coming and going, and I wanted a bit of that luck on my side.

Near midnight the bulb blew. In the dark we each put a hand flat on the table, and Ines said we should seal it: four hands in, no cards, no money, just the four of us leaning in. We stayed like that until the landlord came in with a torch and told us to go home. We did not go home. We walked down to the harbour and waited for the first boat, and when it came we were still holding on to each other like idiots.

Write back and tell me whether they ever replaced that bulb. I'd like to think the room is still dark and the table is still ours.

Yours in the wet, Lou
