Pooh and Tigger playing on skin

Colour · Photo

Winnie the Pooh lies on his back in a red shirt while Tigger leaps onto his belly, both drawn in yellow, orange and black with soft outlines. Two small butterflies and a cluster of flowers in pink, blue and green sit to the left and lower right, with dotted trails around them. The shading is soft and the composition is wide, filling most of the frame against pale skin.

Come in off the landing, the lot of you, and sit where the lift can't reach your toes. Right. Where was I. Ah yes, the bear.

Pooh Bear had lived so long under the big oak that he had worn a hollow in the grass on his back, and it was in that hollow he lay the afternoon the honey ran out. Pink flowers on the verge, blue ones by the bins, the bees gone quiet with the heat. He had his red shirt on, buttoned wrong, and he was thinking of nothing at all, which was his great talent.

Then came the tiger. You could hear him before you saw him, a sort of boing going up the stairwell of the grass. Tigger came down the bank with his tail up like a flagpole, and he did not look where he was going, because a tiger who looks where he is going has never had any fun. He landed on the bear's soft middle with both feet and bounced, and the bear went up like a cushion and came down laughing so hard the butterflies dropped out of the air.

Now I'll tell you what the bear said, because it is the only true part. He said, "Tigger, you have landed on my honey-stomach," and Tigger said, "Yes, and it is the bounciest thing in the whole wood," and that was the end of the quarrel. Two small butterflies went off over the fence, leaving dotted tracks in the air behind them, as if someone had been counting.

So if your nan tells you the grass is for lying in, she is right. Off you go now, and mind the lift.
