The bear had eaten two pots of the clover honey and was working at the third when the miller's girl came up the path with a basket on her hip. He looked up, cheeks sticky, and said he was searching for his friend Hollin, who had gone off across the stream three days before and not come back. Nobody in Ashby Wood had seen Hollin. The girl, whose name was Maren, said she would help if he would stop eating the honey. He said he would try, then ate the fourth pot too.

They walked the stream bank together. Maren noticed that the bear did not look at the path but at the ground in front of his feet, picking out flat stones of the right size and turning them until they fitted the gaps in the mud. He told her the world was a sort of puzzle that came apart if you looked at all of it at once, so you had to take one piece and then the next. At the ford they found a red scarf snagged on a root, then a tangle of blue ribbon, then a yellow shawl caught in the reeds.

Hollin was sitting in the middle of the stream on a flat rock. A heart of patched cloth, stitched from every scrap the village had lost over the winter, was tied to his wrist on a long string, and it bobbed above him like a balloon. He said he had kept the pieces so that someone could find him, and that all they had to do was follow them. The bear laughed so hard he dropped his honey pot, and it rolled into the water, and nobody minded at all.
